Boris mocks Rishi Sunak’s seatbelt fine on anniversary of his resignation

Boris Johnson has marked the one-year anniversary of his fall from power by mocking Rishi Sunak.

In a promotional video filmed from the back of his car, Mr Johnson is seen promoting his latest Daily Mail column, out this evening.

He says it will focus on the ULEZ expansion in London, which has come under renewed scrutiny this week as Labour’s candidate in Mr Johnson’s old constituency seemed to criticise the expansion after a prolonged period of support.

Keen-eyed users may have spotted a non-subtle dig from Mr Johnson to Rishi Sunak at the start of the video, however.

Boris Johnson opened with: “Hi folks, Boris Johnson here.”

“Wearing a seatbelt in the back of the car…”

The greeting is unmistakably a jibe at Rishi Sunak, who received a police fine in January this year for filming a video in the back of his ministerial car while not wearing a seat belt.

Mr Sunak paid the fine and described it as a “brief error of judgement”, his second fixed penalty notice after a Partygate fine.

Mr Johnson resigned as Prime Minister on this day in 2022.

The day began with multiple ministerial resignations, including the newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi calling on Mr Johnson to go, before he announced as much at midday.

The BBC’s Chris Mason broke the news live on the Today Programme at 9:07 am, after receiving a tip off from Mr Johnson’s director of communications.

A poll out today showed just one in four British voters believe Rishi Sunak to be doing a better job as PM than Boris.

More 2019 Tory voters still prefer Mr Johnson over Mr Sunak.
