The former presenter of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme host accused Mr Johnson of being full of “something and wind” and accused him on not delivering on his promises to the British people. Mr Humphrys, who was a presenter on the Corporation’s programme for more than 30 years, revealed Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister who impressed him most during interviews. BBC impartiality rules have prevented Mr Humphrys from expressing his political opinions too much, but he is now free to do so after stepping down last year.

During an interview with Times Radio, he was asked whether he voted for Mr Johnson during last December’s general election.

Mr Humphrys replied: “No, I didn’t vote for Johnson.

“I’ve not been a fan of Johnson.

“I can say that now, I couldn’t say that a year ago, could I?”

The veteran journalist also accused the Prime Minister of being “great at bluster” but “not too good” at delivering on his promises.

Mr Humphrys said: “There’s a lovely old Welsh expression, I’m not allowed to use it because this is public broadcasting, but he’s full of something; something and wind.

“He’s great at the bluster bit but he’s not too good when it comes to delivering.”

The Mastermind presenter went onto say Mr Johnson is “not a man I hugely admire”, adding he could not see that Prime Minister had “gained” from his upbringing and private school education.

Mr Humphrys added: “His background is, for somebody like me – a working-class boy and all that, anathema.

“You know, he had all the benefits, all the advantages of going to the finest school in the world, if that’s what Eton really is, and a wonderful university, all the rest of it.

“I can’t quite see what he gained from all that. He’s not a man I hugely admire, let’s put it like that.”

But Mr Humphrys also insisted it is “complete rubbish” that he has a dislike for all politicians.

Mr Johnson and his Conservative Party won the election by a landslide last December, crushing the opposition to secure a huge 80-seat majority in the House of Commons.

But his Government has come under increasing pressure over recent months, predominantly around their management of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 45,000 people throughout the UK.
