Boris Johnson in Downing Street: Will Boris and girlfriend Carrie Symonds get a dog?
He may not have even moved into Downing Street yet but Prime Minister Boris Johnson is already planning a furry new friend to join him. Mr Johnson wants to get a new pooch to live alongside No 10 Downing Street’s famous four-legged pet, Larry the Cat. A Downing Street insider said of Mr Johnson’s dog plans: “It wouldn’t be a puppy. “It would probably be a rescue dog. It would have to be a cat and dog that got along.”
Mr Johnson is said to have told staff of his plans who have backed the idea.
Rescue feline Larry was brought in from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home to tackle a mouse issue at Number 10.
The nation has since fallen in love with him and he has 307,100 followers on Twitter.
The confident tabby can often be seen lazing outside on the ground or patiently waiting on the doorstep to get inside Number 10.
Mr Johnson is also said to have boasted that peace has been “declared” between Larry and next door’s moggy Palmerston, who is also a Battersea rescue cat.
The two felines have been seen in various scraps over disputed territories.
Foreign Office mouser Palmerston arrived in 2016.
Both cats ‘reacted’ to the news of a dog arriving on their respective Twitter parody accounts today.
Larry the Cat simply had the words: “HELL NO” in response to a tweet saying “Boris Wants A Dog in Downing Street”.
Palmerston wrote: “Great to hear that PM @BorisJohnson wants to put a stop to the cat-fight between me and @Number10cat.
“I’m ready to put the past behind us! So long as Larry knows who’s in charge…”
Downing Street has seen dogs before – Winston Churchill famously had a poodle called Rufus.
But cats have dominated Whitehall in recent years.
Carrie Symonds, who will move in with the Prime Minister to Number 11 next week, is a known dog lover so may have something to do with the move.
Reports suggest the dog is likely to be another rescue dog.
There is no indication of whether he or she will be a particular breed.
