He said: “August 16 is nailed on. There has never been any question of a review date for August 16.” From then, people who have had two jabs will no longer have to isolate if a contact tests positive for Covid-19.

The PM added: “I’m very pleased this is a country that has the highest proportion of vaccinated adults of any country in the world.”

Yesterday the UK recorded 27,734 lab-confirmed Covid cases, the first increase in a week. A further 91 people died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

Mr Johnson added: “The most important thing is for people to recognise that the current situation still calls for a lot of caution and for people just to remember that the virus is still out there, that a lot of people have got it, it still presents a significant risk.”

Expert Mike Tildesley said it was not clear if the third wave was turning around and the recent drop in infections could be down to people not getting tested before their holidays.
