Boris and Carrie’s relationship – affair rumours and ‘compromising position’
Boris Johnson has announced that he will be stepping down as Prime Minister after a flurry of resignations from MPs.
Johnson plans to stay on in a caretaker role until autumn while the Conservative party elects a new leader.
During his resignation speech, Johnson thanked his family.
He said: "I want to thank Carrie and our children, and all the members of our family who have had to put up with so much for so long.”
Carrie and Johnson’s relationship was thrust into the spotlight following his resignation after it was revealed that they planned to host their belated wedding party at Chequers this summer.
Senior Conservatives claimed that their big bash was one of the reasons Johnson was attempting to “cling on” to his role as PM.
Now, the venue has been changed but the pair are still expected to throw a more extravagant celebration after getting married in a low-key ceremony last year.
Ahead of their wedding do this summer, here’s everything you need to know about Johnson and Carrie’s relationship.
When did Boris and Carrie meet?
It’s not clear exactly when Boris and Carrie first met, although it’s likely that they had met by 2012 when Carrie worked on his re-election campaign for mayor of London.
By 2018, 29-year-old Carrie Symmonds had been promoted to Head of Communications for the Conservative Party.
It’s believed that they started a relationship that year and Lord Ashcroft’s book First Lady claims that the pair were caught in a “compromising position” while Johnson was Foreign Secretary.
That same year, Johnson divorced his second wife Marina Wheeler, who was going through cancer treatment at the time. It has been alleged that they split after she discovered Johnson was having an affair with Carrie.
It wasn’t the first time that Johnson was alleged to have had affairs during his marriage to Wheeler.
Boris and Carrie's rocky start
In 2019 Boris and Carrie moved in together, and were rumoured to be living in Symmonds’ East London home.
In June that year, the police were called to the property after neighbours heard a loud altercation that involved screaming, shouting and banging.
A neighbour told The Guardian that they heard a woman shouting “get off me" and "get out of my flat".
Police arrived at the flat shortly after midnight but reported that the occupants were “all safe and well”.
After the incident the couple were spotted looking loved-up in the countryside and in July 2019 they purchased a £1.3million house in Camberwell.
In July 2019, Johnson was also elected as leader of the Conservative party and he and Carrie moved into Downing Street.
Later that year they adopted their dog Dilyn.
Carrie and Boris’ children and marriage
On February 18 2020, Boris’ divorce from Marina Wheeler was finalised and on February 29 Johnson and Carrie announced that they were engaged and expecting a baby.
A spokesperson for the couple announced: “The prime minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.”
On April 29 2020 their first child together was born. A statement released by them revealed that they had welcomed a “healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning”.
They named their son Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson. In an Instagram post Carrie explained the name, writing: “Wilfred after Boris’s grandfather, Lawrie after my grandfather, Nicholas after Dr Nick Price and Dr Nick Hart – the two doctors that saved Boris’s life last month."
Boris and Carrie got married on May 26 2020 during a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral – not long after he was hospitalised with severe Covid.
After, they had a reception in the Downing Street garden. The wedding was attended by just 30 guests because of Covid rules.
In July 2021, the couple announced that they were expecting their second child together after they had experienced a miscarriage earlier in the year.
They welcomed their second child, a girl, on December 9 2021.
They named their daughter Romy Iris Charlotte Johnson.
Johnson explained that the name comes from her aunt Rosemary, that Iris is the Greek word for rainbow and that Charlotte was after Johnson’s late mother.
Romy is believed to be Johnson's eighth child, after years of speculation that he refused to address.
