BBC host’s sassy side-eye during Brexit talk perfectly captures ‘mood of nation’

Last night The Prime Minister was humiliated and the country was thrown into a political crisis after MPs rejected her new Brexit deal.

The House of Commons voted 391-242 against Theresa May’s plan – just 56 days after it suffered the biggest defeat in history.

Understandably, people are feeling a range of emotions right now, with manly likely switching from confusion to frustration, and back again.

And these feelings were perfectly encapsulated by a BBC host on television last night as she interviewed a panel of MPs about what on earth is going to happen next for Britain.

While grilling politician Barry Gardiner about Labour’s Brexit stance, Newsnight host Emily Maitlis dropped some seriously sassy ‘side-eye’.

The 48-year-old asked the MP: "If there is a general election called, which there is every likelihood could happen, what will be on your manifesto? What Brexit vision will be on your manifesto then?"

He replied: "To negotiate the deal that we have set out."

Maitlis couldn’t stop herself from interrupting him, enquiring: "That’s going to be on the leaflet?"

Gardiner continued: "We will decide what our manifesto position is as we normally do…"

At which point, Maitlis began shuffling her papers before glancing off to her right with a look of sheer exasperation on her face.

She then began scrawling notes, which many viewers at home were desperate to have a glance at.

The MP added: "It is a democratic party, as you know, it is not made up by one person on Newsnight as you know."

Still seemingly unimpressed, Maitlis shot back: "Well it’s not made up at all, people are literally pulling their hair out tonight."

Following the heated exchange, the host was praised on social media for "capturing the mood of the nation".

One person tweeted: "Emily Maitlis speaks for the nation."

Another commented: "Emily Maitlis’ reaction here is PERFECT."

A third added: "Maitlis side-eye has knocked the planet off orbit."

"What a mood," wrote a fourth.

However not everyone was impressed with the host’s behaviour, with some branding it "unprofessional".

Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Maitlis joked that she hadn’t been writing during the show but instead was "crossing out all future dates and holiday plans".

She later admitted that she had been making notes of what the guests were saying.

She explained: "When I’m trying to process thoughts I write down what they’ve just said so I can actually take it in and see if it makes sense to me."
