Officers bundled Sir Keir into a police car after protesters, who also shouted Jimmy Savile slurs, followed him and Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy outside Scotland Yard.

The incident, branded “absolutely disgraceful” by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, happened shortly after 5pm.

Two people were arrested during clashes with police on Victoria Embankment.

Video showed Sir Keir surrounded and taunted over Covid restrictions.

Abuse included shouts of, “Why aren’t you opposing?”, “Traitor” and one of “you should be hung”.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Keir was also attacked over his department’s failure to prosecute sex predator Savile and accused of “protecting paedophiles”.

It followed Mr Johnson’s claim in the Commons that the Labour boss did not prosecute Savile, even though he personally played no role in the case or the decision. Piers Corbyn, the Covid conspiracy theorist brother of ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, led chants of: “Resist, defy, do not comply.”

Mr Johnson tweeted: “The behaviour directed at the Leader of the Opposition tonight is absolutely disgraceful.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was talking to police about the incident. Tory MP Julian Smith – who previously called for Mr Johnson to retract his claim – called the mob’s actions appalling.

He added: “It is really important for our democracy and for [Sir Keir’s] security that the false Savile slurs made against him are withdrawn in full.” Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage told his GB News show the ambush represented “a side of politics that seems to get uglier by the month”.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir has been cleared by police of breaking lockdown rules after being filmed drinking a beer the run-up to last year’s Hartlepool by-election. Durham Police said no offence was committed.
