Ann Widdecombe fury at Brussels bureaucrats ‘They think they’ve got us where they want us’

The Brexit Party MEP, who has served as a politician in Britain since 1987, revealed the differences between UK and EU politics while working in Brussels as she exclusively spoke to Express.co.uk in central London on Friday night ahead of her party’s conference. Ms Widdecombe launched an attack on the “bureaucratic” EU over Brexit and urged for the UK to finally “break the mould” and unshackle itself from the bloc.

She told Express.co.uk: “Brussels is absolutely ghastly, it’s undemocratic, it’s bureaucratic, it’s extravagant, it is not my idea of how you actually carry out a representative responsibility, but there we are, I’m there, duty calls.”

Ms Widdecombe, who came out of retirement to join the Brexit Party as an MEP, also opened up about the bizarre runnings of the EU that have “shocked” her.

During the fiery rant, she said: “I don’t think I found anything that I wasn’t expecting to find but it’s always still a bit of a shock when you do it.

“For example – the whole move from Brussels to Strasbourg and back again, every single month.

“That’s all the MEPs, and all their staff move and have to be accommodated of course, all the files go, all the supplementary staff go, and then the whole thing later reverses and they go back to Brussels.

“Now, what, what in the name of heaven is the point of that?”

Ms Widdecombe, who defected from the Tory Party to join Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, accused EU bosses of trying to make it “difficult” for the UK to leave in order to deter other countries from wanting to exit the 27-member bloc.

She said it was time to “break the mould” and leave the EU on October 31, with or without a deal.

The 71-year-old former Tory MP said: “They’re [the EU] is not pleased but they think they’ve got us where they want us, it’s as simple as that.

“They said right at the beginning in terms, Barnier said, they’re going to make it as difficult as possible for us in order to deter other countries from wanting to leave.

“They’ve succeeded in doing that and they’re going to go on doing that before somebody breaks the mould.”

In a direct message to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, she urged him to leave the bloc with a “clean break” despite admitting her “severe doubts” the UK would Brexit by the Halloween deadline.

She added: “That’s why Boris says he’s going to deliver on 31 October and I’ve got severe doubts, most of us would say if he can get us out with a clean break on 31 October that would be wonderful.”

Hundreds of Brexit Party MEPs gathered in central London tonight for the anti-EU party’s last conference.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage also launched an attack on EU Commission President Jean Claude-Juncker for pinning the blame on the UK for Brexit.

Mr Farage told Express.co.uk: ““I don’t care what he thinks and nor does the British public.

“We’re sick to death of being told what to do by foreign bureaucrats.. what we should and shouldn’t do, what we should and shouldn’t think.”

Mr Farage told the website Brexit Party supporters had “had enough” of being “humiliated” and “talked down to”.
