Pro-EU Lord Adonis appeared on LBC to debate the current state of the Labour Party and the future relationship between the UK and the European Union. Host Iain Dale asked the Labour life peer whether he believes the UK may seek to rejoin the bloc to which Lord Adonis passionately claimed it was likely to happen “in his lifetime”. The 58-year-old explained the UK population would get fed up with lagging behind the rest of Europe to which politician Ann Widdecombe could be seen cringing at the suggestion.
Speaking on LBC, host Iain Dale asked Lord Adonis questions about the EU.
He said: “You know, we’re roughly the same age, do you think that it’s possible that within our respective lifetimes that we could rejoin the EU?”
Lord Adonis quickly replied: “Yes, I’d be very surprised if we don’t.
“Because I think the reason we went [the EU], and the British people aren’t ideological and doctrinaire about these things.
“The reason we went into Europe in the 1970s is that we were falling so far behind, France, Germany, the Netherlands.”
Lord Adonis then explained there was a point in time where the Italian economy looked like it would overtake Britain’s.
He continued: “This is the reason why we went into the common market because we wanted to create a single large market for trading our goods.
“Margaret Thatcher who was, and I understand Ann Widdecombe adores Margaret Thatcher, took this further to create a larger frictionless [market].”

Mr Dale then quipped Lord Adonis was making many assumptions about Ms Widdecombe in a call back to their previous clashes where Lord Adonis said Ms Widdecombe supported a cut in foreign aid.
The former Conservative MP has previously called for foreign aid to be “redirected” rather than cut entirely.
Lord Adonis continued: “I’m trying to see [if Ann] has a proper opportunity to defend Margaret Thatcher.
“Because Margaret Thatcher was the one who then extended this market because she wanted a bigger market for British goods.
“It was that reason why we went in in the 70s and as our trade suffers and people become poor and their jobs go, which is what is going to really matter to people.
“Exactly those same forces will come to bear and then, of course, all the lies, remember we were when we Brexit was done on the basis that was supposed to be 350 million pounds a week for the NHS.”
Mr Dale responded by saying many politicians and commentators appeared on his show to discuss the extra funding adding former prime minister Theresa May said the NHS would receive an extra £20billion by 2023.
