Fox Plans New Weather Channel And Criticism, Jokes Rain Down
Media baron Rupert Murdoch is jumping into the weather forecasting game with a new channel, Fox Weather, to debut later this year, The New York Times reported.
And people have concerns, given the right-wing spin of Murdoch’s other Fox outlets — in particular Fox News ― whose personalities have often denied the very existence of the climate crisis itself.
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes said Wednesday he was “hard-pressed to think of someone worse” than Murdoch to run a weather channel, warning he “will try to do for the world’s climate what he has done for American democracy; deny it, undermine it, lead it to the brink of destruction.”

Media watchdog group Media Matters for America responded with this montage of Fox News personalities denying global warming:
Washington Post columnist Alexandra Petri penned a spoof programming list for the new channel, featuring shows such as “Worst Weather Moments of the Obama Administration” and “Static Shots of Trump Golf Courses Where the Weather Is Very Nice.”
Twitter users also chimed in, with many referencing so-called Sharpie-gate, when then-President Donald Trump in 2019 held up a map showing the projected trajectory of Hurricane Dorian that appeared to have been crudely edited with a marker pen:

China fines internet giants in anti-monopoly cases
BEIJING — Companies including internet giants Alibaba and Tencent were fined Wednesday by anti-monopoly regulators in a new move to tighten control over their fast-developing industries.
In 22 cases, companies were fined 500,000 yuan ($75,000) each for actions including acquiring stakes in other companies that might improperly increase their market power, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced. It said violators include six companies owned by Alibaba Group, five by Tencent Holding Ltd. and two by retailer Suning.com, Ltd.
China’s leaders worry about the dominance of its biggest internet companies, which are expanding into finance, health services and other sensitive areas. The ruling Communist Party says anti-monopoly enforcement, especially in tech, is a priority this year.
In the biggest penalty to date, Alibaba was fined 18.3 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) in April on charges of suppressing competition. Other companies have been fined or reprimanded for violating competition, data protection, censorship and other rules.
On Sunday, ride-hailing service Didi Global Inc., which had a U.S. stock market debut last week, was ordered by regulators to overhaul its collection and handling of customer information.

Tucker Carlson Goes Full ‘1984’ With ‘Cameras In The Classroom’ Proposal
Fox News personality Tucker Carlson railed against the teaching of critical race theory in schools on Tuesday and suggested cameras should be used in classrooms to check on exactly what teachers are telling their students.
Carlson, in a rant reminiscent of something from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel “1984,” called the teaching that racism is at least partly systemic ― currently a focus of anger from conservatives ― a “civilization-ending poison” and “B.S.”
He warned “we can’t really be sure” how far it is being spread until “we finally get cameras in the classroom, as we put them on the chests of police officers.”
Carlson also proposed “a civilian review board in every town in America to oversee the people teaching your children, forming their minds.”
“And let’s hope we get both of those very soon,” he added.
