Tokyo sees 91 new cases of coronavirus infections

European Economics Preview: Germany Factory Orders Data Due

Factory orders from Germany and investor confidence from euro area are due on Monday, headlining a light day for the European economic news.

At 2.00 am ET, Destatis is scheduled to issue Germany’s factory orders data for February. Orders are expected to fall 2.5 percent on month, in contrast to a 5.5 percent rise in January.

At 3.00 am ET, the Czech Statistical Office releases industrial output and foreign trade data. Industrial output is expected to fall 0.8 percent on year, following a 1.4 percent decrease in January.

At 3.30 am ET, IHS Markit is set to issue Germany’s construction Purchasing Managers’ survey data for March.

At 4.30 am ET, Eurozone Sentix investor confidence data is due. The sentiment index is forecast to decline sharply to -37.5 in April from -17.1 in March.

In the meantime, UK Markit/CIPS construction PMI data is due. Economists forecast the index to fall to 44.0 in March from 52.6 in February.

Police investigating fatal shooting in southeast Aurora – The Denver Post

Police are investigating a homicide in southeast Aurora after a shooting occurred on Sunday night, according to an Aurora Police Department tweet.

The shooting happened at Sonoma Resort Apartments on the 22300 block of East Ontario Drive. No details on a suspect or victims have been released.

Freeport-McMoRan closes New Mexico mine as coronavirus cases spread

April 12 (Reuters) – Freeport-McMoRan Inc, the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer, said on Sunday it has suspended operations at its Chino mine in New Mexico due to the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

The move comes after three employees tested positive for the virus earlier this month. Freeport said that more employees have now tested positive, while adding the contagion is not “widespread.” (Reporting by Ernest Scheyder Editing by Shri Navaratnam)

The price at the pump continues to move lower as demand slumps due to the coronavirus.

The average regular-grade gasoline fell 14 cents over the past two weeks, to $2.01 per gallon, according to the latest Lundberg Survey.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg says gas prices have dropped 52 cents over the past seven weeks as demand declines amid widespread stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic.

The highest average price in the nation for regular-grade gas is $3.22 per gallon in Honolulu.

Man jailed for assaulting doctor outside A&E

A homeless man has been jailed for six months after assaulting a doctor.

Gareth Rudge, 34, attacked the emergency worker outside the A&E at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, at around 12.50am on 10 April.

The doctor suffered injuries to their head and face but went on working after the incident.

Russia reports new record daily rise in coronavirus cases

MOSCOW (REUTERS) – Russia on Monday (April 13) reported 2,558 new cases of the novel coronavirus, a record daily rise, bringing its overall nationwide tally to 18,328.

Russia’s coronavirus crisis response centre said that 148 people diagnosed with the virus have died so far, an overnight rise of 18.

5.0-magnitude quake hits 188km south of Sarangani, Philippines

HONG KONG (XINHUA) – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 jolted the region 188km south of Sarangani province in the Philippines at 0644 GMT (2.44pm Singapore time) on Monday (April 13), the US Geological Survey said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 37.81km, was initially determined to be at 3.6989 degrees north latitude and 125.3487 degrees east longitude.

TOKYO (REUTERS) – Tokyo saw 91 new cases of coronavirus infections on Monday (April 13), Japan’s media reported, as the tally of infections in the country’s capital continues to rise.

Monday’s figure showed a decrease in the rate of daily infections from Sunday, when the Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 166 new cases.

Last week the city announced a state of emergency, requesting residents to stay indoors as much as possible.
