The Yankees’ Luke Voit trade now looks even better
The Yankees are not yet sure if it landed them an everyday first baseman, but it sure does look like a steal.
Flipping relievers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos to the Cardinals for Luke Voit worked out last year for the Yankees, as the powerful righty burst onto the scene with 14 home runs in just 39 games. And it hasn’t worked quite as well immediately for St. Louis, who designated Shreve for assignment on Friday.
The 28-year-old lefty pitched well for the Cardinals last year, putting up a 3.07 ERA in 14 2/3 innings after the trade, but he didn’t dazzle this spring training, in which he’s had a 5.00 ERA in nine innings.
Gallegos also has had a rough camp (9.82 ERA), but the 27-year-old is more a prospect and can start the year in the minors.
Meanwhile, Voit has made a strong pitch that last year’s emergence was not a fluke, but Greg Bird also has excelled this spring.
The Yankees could have two first basemen or zero, but they do not have any second-thoughts about their Voit trade.
