GOP Sen. Thom Tillis diagnosed with prostate cancer, will have surgery next week

  • Sen. Thom Tillis has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery next week.
  • The North Carolina Republican expects to make a "full recovery."
  • The 60-year-old senator won a second six-year term in November.

Sen. Thom Tillis has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery next week to treat it, he announced Monday.

"I am in the hands of outstanding medical professionals and expect to make a full recovery," the North Carolina Republican said in a statement.

Tillis, 60, won election to his second six-year term in November. The senator said he had no symptoms and the cancer was found early after testing during an annual physical.

"Early detection can truly save lives," he said.

Tillis traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border last week with a group of Republican senators.

The full Senate will not convene again until mid-April. It is unclear whether Tillis will miss any votes in the Senate, where each major party holds 50 seats.

Before winning election to the Senate in 2014, Tillis served as speaker in the North Carolina state House.

Biden Extends Federal Moratorium On Evictions Amid Pandemic

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is extending a federal moratorium on evictions of tenants who have fallen behind on rent during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention moved to continue the pandemic-related protection, which had been scheduled to expire on Wednesday. The moratorium is now extended through the end of June.

The moratorium, initially put in place last year, provides protection for renters out of concern that having families lose their homes and move into shelters or share crowded conditions with relatives or friends during a pandemic would further spread the highly contagious coronavirus.

To be eligible for protection, renters must earn $198,000 or less for couples filing jointly, or $99,000 for single filers; demonstrate that they’ve sought government help to pay the rent; declare that they can’t pay because of COVID-19 hardships; and affirm they are likely to become homeless if evicted.

The Textile Designer Bringing Ethiopian Craft to a New Audience

A return to her birthplace resulted in an unexpected cultural connection and the launch of a new business. Born in Ethiopia, Hana Getachew was largely raised in the West, but returned as a young adult and had an epiphany of sorts. Impressed by the country’s artistic traditions, she saw an opportunity to share them with the broader world. To produce her collections of ethically sourced handwoven pillows, throws and linens, the Kingston, New York–based owner of Bolé Road Textiles collaborates with artisans living and working in Ethiopia.
