‘Several’ climbers caught in Ben Nevis avalanche

Several climbers have been caught up in an avalanche on Ben Nevis, police say.

A mountain rescue operation has been launched after the avalanche occurred on Britain’s highest mountain this morning.

Scottish police were alerted to the incident shortly before noon and are currently "co-ordinating" the response to the disaster.

A coastguard helicopter and an air ambulance are among the crews that have been sent to the scene, the BBC reports.

It is unclear at present how many climbers have been caught up in the avalanche, and whether there are any injuries.

Police Scotland said in a statement: "We were made aware of an avalanche on Ben Nevis shortly after 11:50 this morning.

"Police Scotland is currently co-ordinating the mountain rescue response to this incident and is supporting partners at the scene.

"No further details are available at this time."

Yesterday, the Scottish Avalanche Information Service had deemed the potential avalanche risk in the Lochaber area as being "high".

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain and Ireland.

It stands at a whopping 1,345 metres above sea level.
