R. Kelly evaded law because of alleged victims’ race and class: Lawyer
The lawyer representing two of R. Kelly‘s alleged victims claimed Monday that the R&B singer was allowed to prey on them — and potentially other young girls — for decades because the teens were poor and black.
“Had these victims not been black and had they not come from, in many cases, disadvantaged households of lower socioeconomic status, this guy would not be walking free today,” lawyer Michael Avenatti told reporters in Chicago, just after the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer appeared in court to plead not guilty to a 10-count indictment charging him with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
“Those days, however, are over. The reign of abuse and assault by Mr. Kelly is about to come to an abrupt and permanent end.”
Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, is accused of sexually abusing four victims — including three minors between the ages of 13 and 16 — from 1998 to 2010.
The 52-year-old disgraced musician has been cooling his heels behind bars as his lawyers figure out how to put up 10 percent of the $100,000 total bail.
His lawyer, Steve Greenberg, has insisted he’s innocent and accused the women of lying.
