Powerful winds cause delays at LaGuardia Airport

Powerful winds disrupted flights at LaGuardia Airport on Monday.

Departure delays of up to 45 minutes were reported as a result of the powerful winds, while inbound flights were being held at their origin an average of 2 hours and 58 minutes, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Arrival delays for airborne aircraft averaged 26 minutes.

A high-wind warning remained in effect in the Big Apple until 6 p.m. Monday.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph were expected.

The National Weather Service cautioned that damaging winds could down trees and power lines, and that power outages were expected.

At Newark Liberty International Airport the air train was suspended at 9 a.m. and replaced by buses “due to high wind,” the airport tweeted.

Mayor de Blasio’s office warned in a tweet Monday morning: “Please exercise caution on your commutes this morning.”
