To the Editor:
Re “Marian Sulzberger Heiskell, Civic Leader and Philanthropist, Dies at 100” (obituary, March 16):
Among the many achievements in her long life, Marian Sulzberger Heiskell was responsible for a remarkable publishing idea. In the early 1970s, she remarked to her husband, Andrew Heiskell, then chief executive of Time Inc., that the best read department of Time magazine was its weekly People page featuring celebrities. She suggested that a magazine could be started called People.
Mr. Heiskell took her idea to the editors, and the result was the creation of People, which became one of the biggest successes in publishing history.
