Nicki Minaj Denies Copyright Infringement Claim By Tracy Chapman

Nicki Minaj has responded to singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman‘s copyright infringement allegations for having interpolated her hit song, “Baby Can I Hold You” in Minaj’s unreleased track, “Sorry,” recorded for her 2018 album, “Queen.”

Minaj filed several documents at the California federal court on Friday, February 22, denying all contentions and stating that her interpolation of the song is protected by the doctrine of fair use.

Additionally, she brought to the notice of the court that her team’s repeated requests to license the song were denied by Chapman each time.

Chapman “has not properly registered her claim to the copyright in the Composition,” continued the document, stating that she is not entitled to any “claims alleged in the Complaint,” including damages.
