Man spared in New Zealand massacre fled violence in native Afghanistan

Ahmed Khan fled violence in his native Afghanistan to live in one of the world’s safest countries — New Zealand, where he was witness to unimaginable horror inside a Christchurch mosque.

As Khan tried to comfort one of the victims of Friday’s massacre inside the Linwood Islamic Center, white supremacist gunman Brenton Tarrant took aim once more, shooting the dying worshiper in the head, he told CNN.

“I said to him, ‘Calm down, the police are here now,’” Khan said. “And the gunman came through the window again while I was holding him and shot him in the head. And he was dead.”

The unidentified man was one of seven victims killed at Linwood, and among 49 total, when Tarrant stormed it and the Al Noor mosque with five guns during Friday afternoon prayer services.

Forty-one were shot dead at the Al Noor mosque — possibly including Khan’s uncle — about 20 minutes before Tarrant terrorized Linwood. One victim died at a hospital.

Khan, who immigrated 12 years ago, said Tarrant shot anyone in his line of fire outside Lindwood, then blasted bullets through the windows.

Worshipers inside scrambled to take cover as women and children screamed, Khan told the network. Before tending to the wounded man, Khan said he pulled an injured child to safety.
