Man arrested for driving on sidewalk, almost hitting children
Police on Wednesday busted a Brooklyn man who drove onto the sidewalk, nearly striking one child, to bypass school buses stopped in front of a school, police sources said.
Samuel Itzkowitz Jr., 23, was arrested on Wednesday morning for hopping the curb and driving his dark-colored sedan on the sidewalk of 53rd Street in Borough Park as several young children were walking into Talmud Torah Imrei Chaim Viznitz on Feb. 20, police and law enforcement sources said.
The dangerous move was caught on video, which was posted to Twitter by former state Assemblyman Dov Hikind.
The footage shows four children walking from the street onto the sidewalk, and coming within feet of the slow-moving sedan. Itzkowitz then speeds off, despite an adult instructing him to stop, according to the video.
Itzkowitz, who lives less than a half mile away, was charged with several counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, failure to stop for a school bus, and driving a motor vehicle on the sidewalk, police said.
He was issued a desk-appearance ticket and was released. He is due to appear in court on April 3.
