Man admits killing his infant son in ‘act of deliberate violence’

A man has admitted killing his four-month-old son in an “act of deliberate violence”.

Sam Gildea, 30, from Partington in Greater Manchester, had been due to stand trial for the murder of Alfie Gildea at Minshull Street Crown Court.

But he decided to plead guilty to an alternative count of manslaughter and that was accepted by the Crown.

Alfie’s mother called emergency services after returning home to find him unconscious on the morning of 12 September.

The infant was taken to hospital with significant head injuries and died two days later.

Andrew Thomas QC, prosecuting, said Gildea’s guilty plea had been accepted on the basis that he admitted causing Alfie’s death with an “act of deliberate and unlawful violence which involved rigorous and violent shaking”.

Gildea also pleaded guilty to a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour towards Alfie’s mother.

He has a history of involvement with mental health services, the court heard.

Because Gildea’s dangerousness needs to be assessed, sentencing will not be until Friday at the earliest.
