Thousands Defy Covid Risk in Manila to Attend Nazarene Feast

Tens of thousands of people ignored government advice and flocked to the Philippines capital Manila on Saturday to celebrate the feast of the Black Nazarene, a statue that is believed to have healing powers.

Between 20,000 and 30,000 pilgrims gathered in the city’s Quiapo district, according to media reports. While only 400 at a time were allowed inside the church where the statue stands because of coronavirus restrictions, thousands others prayed outside the building, Rappler reported.

More than a million people have taken part in the annual pilgramage over past years. On Saturday, most people appear to have heeded the advice of authorities and health experts, who urged devotees to stay home and attend mass online.

The Philippines has the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia, at more than 480,000 as of Jan. 8.

The feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the country’s biggest annual security challenges as the faithful of Asia’s most Catholic country troop to the capital.

Certain Lots Of Sportmix Pet Food Being Recalled

The U.S. FDA has expanded a pet food recall after more than 70 dogs have died from suspected aflatoxin poisoning.

Midwestern Pet Foods increased the number of brands it has recalled for possible aflatoxin content. The FDA says the number of dogs who died after eating the company’s products has increased by 42 in the past two weeks.

As of January 11, 2021, FDA is aware of more than 70 pets that have died and more than 80 pets that are sick after eating Sportmix pet food. Not all of these cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning through laboratory testing or veterinary record review.

Midwestern had recalled three varieties of Sportmix dog foods and cat food on December 30. The FDA had then said that 28 dogs had died after eating the food.

Aflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxins can cause illness and death in pets.

The recall now includes all Midwestern Pet Foods dry dog and cat foods containing corn, manufactured in the company’s Oklahoma plant, and having an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022.

Donald Trump Will Not Attend Joe Biden’s Inauguration

President Donald Trump officially announced he will not be attending President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Trump tweeted the announcement Friday.

The announcement was no surprise; Trump has railed against the results of the election for the last two months, pushing conspiracy theories and misinformation about voter fraud while insisting he’d defeated Biden.

Biden won both the popular vote, with more than 81 million votes cast in his favor, and the Electoral College vote. Congress certified the Electoral College votes early Thursday morning, after the process was initially disrupted by a mob of Trump supporters who breached Capitol security.

In a video shared on social media Thursday evening, more than 24 hours after the riot at the Capitol occurred, Trump finally acknowledged that Biden would be taking over the presidency on Jan. 20.

Presidents typically attend the inauguration ceremonies of their successors in order to help facilitate a peaceful transition of power. Three former presidents are expected to attend Biden’s inauguration: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Former President Jimmy Carter, who has attended every inauguration since his own in 1977, has said he will not attend.

Lincoln Project Trolls Mike Pence With An Absolutely Vicious Mock Campaign Ad

Vice President Mike Pence got his first 2024 campaign ad on Tuesday ― but it’s not exactly an endorsement.

The Lincoln Project, a conservative group opposed to President Donald Trump, trolled the VP with a mocking ad extolling his ability to do absolutely nothing:

“Other Republicans abandoned the president, while yet more continued to support him,” the ad derides. “But Mike Pence, using his decades of experience, knew that the best thing to do was nothing at all.”

The ad was released the same day Pence ruled out invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office after last week’s violent attack on the Capitol carried out by the president’s supporters.
