Late football player’s family sues Disney, Paramount for wrongful death

The family of a former football player-turned-actor has sued a number of companies, including Disney, for their alleged role in his death at the age of 49.

The family of late Arena Football League Hall of Famer Darryl Hammond’s (not the “SNL” star Darrell Hammond) has filed a wrongful death suit against the AFL, Walt Disney Pictures and Paramount Pictures, claiming his time playing the sport, and contributing to movies about it, led to his death, according to The Blast.

After Hammond died in 2017 after a battle with ALS, his family donated his brain to Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center and Program. An autopsy found that he had suffered 200 concussions while playing football and diagnosed him with stage three CTE.

His family claims that the concussions were “all from football,“ and that the filming of 2004’s “The Longest Yard,” produced by Paramount, and 2006’s “Invincible, produced by Disney, contributed to his CTE.

Hammond’s family is aiming to collect damages from the three companies.
