A senior member of Burkina Faso’s government tested positive for the coronavirus, just days after another lawmaker became the West African country’s first casualty of the pandemic.

Minister of Mines and Quarries Oumarou Idani developed symptoms after returning from a conference in Toronto, his communications’ team said in a statement on its Facebook page on Friday. Foreign Affairs Minister Alpha Barry, Minister for Territorial Administration Simeon Sawadogo and Minister of Education Stanislas Ouaro have also contracted the disease, known as Covid-19.

Burkina Faso, one of Africa’s biggest gold producers, is among the worst affected by the virus in the region with 64 cases and three deaths. President Roch Marc Christian Kabore on Friday closed airports, land borders and imposed a nationwide curfew to curb the spread of the pandemic.

Burkina Faso is also struggling to contain a wave of jihadist violence that has left scores dead and displaced 800,000 people.

Hong Kong Sent Two Infected Travelers Home in Test Mishandling

Hong Kong sent two travelers infected with the novel coronavirus to their homes, instead of transferring them to a hospital for isolation and treatment, after their samples were probably mixed up during testing.

The mistake was discovered in repeat testing early Saturday and the two people were then moved to a hospital, where they are in stable condition, according to a press release published on the government website on Saturday.

Two other people, who were waiting at a temporary test center where travelers with symptoms are being examined upon entering, were allowed to return home after the repeat test showed they weren’t infected.

Hong Kong on Friday suffered its biggest daily increase in new coronavirus cases since the pandemic first reached the city in January, underscoring the mounting challenge to contain the spread after residents rushed back from abroad.

Hungary’s government asked lawmakers to extend a state of emergency indefinitely amid the coronavirus crisis and introduce prison sentences for those deemed to be spreading false information.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban would be allowed to announce steps to contain the pandemic via decrees until the government no longer sees it as necessary, according to the draft legislation published on the parliament website late Friday. Promoting false information that hinders authorities’ efforts would carry a prison term of as long as five years.

Parliament is scheduled to vote on the bill next week, with the ruling parties requiring opposition support to pass it with an 80% majority. Hungary is subject to several European Union probes for violating democratic norms.

The move to curb the flow of some information follows criticism from independent media and opposition groups that the cabinet is withholding details and showing inconsistencies in its crisis management. A person has also been detained for allegedly spreading false claims the nation’s capital faces a lockdown.
