U.S. Urged to Honor One-China Policy Amid Trade Talks

A senior Chinese diplomat said China will honor its phase-one trade commitments, and suggested that the U.S. live up to theirs on issues such as Taiwan.

In an interview with Chinese state television CGTN on Saturday night, Cui Tiankai, China’s ambassador to the U.S., also said talk of a new cold war was “very irresponsible.” The comments came as Beijing and Washington are working on final details of an interim trade deal that may see some of the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods lifted.

“We will always implement what we promised. There is no problem with that,” Cui said. “The U.S. has made commitments to the one-China policy. I just hope they will honor their commitment.”

Earlier this year the Trump administration informally told Congress that it supports a potential sale of F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan, drawing a preemptive warning from China.

U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier this week that he and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping would meet and sign the phase-one deal, but China did not confirm that the two leaders will meet.

“We have full confidence in our negotiators,” Cui said. “Let the two teams do their job. Still, they are under the guidance of the two presidents.”

Top Jobs for Next Decade Are Behavioral Scientist, Data Analyst

The next decade could see growing demand for behavioral scientists, data analysts, upcycled clothing designers and even digital detox consultants.

Brexit, climate change, an economic slowdown and technology are among the factors that could have the greatest impact on jobs in the 2020s, according to the U.K.’s Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. It looked at four possible workplace scenarios:

  • The Big Tech Economy — “a new machine age” where technology develops at a rapid pace, from self-driving cars to 3D printing, bringing cheaper goods but rising unemployment.
    • Jobs: software developers, digital transformation consultants, technology public relations
    • Jobs: behavioral scientists, data analysts, online reputation managers
    • Jobs: food cooperative workers, upcycled clothing designers, community energy managers
    • Jobs: digital detox planners, personal public relations advisers

Over the past 10 years, government austerity, the rise of e-commerce and an aging society have contributed to changes in employment, the report said.

Computer programmers, finance directors and van drivers are among the professions that saw the biggest growth. National government administrators, bank clerks and retail workers were among those hardest hit.

Heartfelt Support Pours In For Rep. John Lewis As He Vows To Fight Cancer

Constituents, lawmakers and citizens across the nation poured out their hearts to support Sen. John Lewis (D-Ga.) Sunday after the civil rights legend revealed that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

“I have been in some kind of fight ― for freedom, equality, basic human rights ― for nearly my entire life,” Lewis said in a statement. “I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now.”

He vowed to fight again and remained hopeful — as did a legion of admirers.

Barack Obama hailed the congressman’s “incomparable will to fight. I know he’s got a lot more of that left in him,” before adding “Praying for you, my friend.”

Sen Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said Lewis has “been up the rough side of the mountain many times before, and his battle with pancreatic cancer is no different. Our nation is praying for you, John.”

If there’s “anyone with the strength and courage to fight this, it’s you, John,” tweeted former President Bill Clinton.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called Lewis a “moral compass for our nation,” one that needs his “grace, grit and integrity … now more than ever.”

Other reactions poured in from celebrities, politicians, media figures and more.

Hallmark Recalls Jar Candles For Fire, Laceration Concerns

Hallmark Marketing Company LLC is recalling about 4,500 units of jar candles citing fire and laceration concerns, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or CPSC announced.

The recall during the festival season involves the frosted balsam soy blend jar candles, which are scented and in green with three wicks. The candle’s glass jar measures about 5 inches high and 4.5 inches in diameter and has a metal top. Hallmark, frosted balsam and an image of a snowy pine cone appear on the front of the candle.

These candles were sold exclusively at Norman’s Hallmark stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania from September 2019 through December 2019 for about $28.

The agency noted that when the candle is lit, the glass jar can break, posing fire and laceration hazards. The recall was initiated after receiving six reports of the glass jar breaking, resulting in fire damage to nearby items. However, there were no reports of injuries till now.

The company urged consumers to immediately stop using the recalled candles and return them for a full refund and a $10 Hallmark Gold Crown gift card.

In recent incidents, Mark Feldstein & Associates is recalling about 5,000 units of Stacked Gourd Jack-O-Lantern decorations. The string light wiring inside of the decorations can overheat, spark or ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Hit Promotional Products recalled about 34,000 units of Coastline ceramic mugs, which can crack or break when used with or exposed to hot liquids, posing burn and laceration hazards.
