Goose, the orange tabby cat featured in the new movie Captain Marvel, is one of the most beloved characters from the film, though she’s no ordinary cat!

The cat is featured in the comics, though she was named Chewie. The name was changed for the movie to identify with the character of Carol Danvers. (Goose as in Goose from Top Gun!)

We won’t spoil what happens in the movie, but it becomes clear at one point that Goose is not just a cat. She’s a Flerken!

So, what is a Flerken? Flerkens are alien creatures that resemble Earth cats in their appearance and behavior. They can carry entire pocket dimensions in their mouths and the tentacles in their mouths can absorb entire universes. They are able to travel across dimensions and realities. Flerkens also lay eggs and can lay up to 117 of them.

Among the abilities of a Flerken is the ability to understand a human conversation.

Goose in the movie Captain Marvel was played by four cats, though one specific cat is the one that was used for most of the closeups and was the model for the CG and prop cats.
