‘Free Solo’ star downplays his role in the Oscar-winning doc
Alex Honnold — the fearless star of NatGeo’s hit “Free Solo” who climbs the 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope — said before the film won an Oscar that he worked the least on the project.
“I know that I’m in the film, but I think I did the least actual work on the film,” he said in a toast to the film’s team at Craft in LA. “I just lived for two years, had a great time and went climbing. And I know that some of you guys were toiling, literally, for years to make this film and I just want to say thank you personally to everyone [who’s] worked on this.”
Also at the intimate event were the Oscar-winning film’s co-directors and producers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, National Geographic Global Networks president Courteney Monroe and Disney Television head Peter Rice.
Said Vasarhelyi: “It was such an ambitious film to hope to make and there was an army that worked on it … We are clearly a family affair.”
Also spotted at the VIP dinner were “Mapplethorpe” director Ondi Timoner, designer Brett Heyman and Frieze LA executive director Bettina Korek.
