FDA Approves Lilly’s New Rapid-acting Insulin Lyumjev

Eli Lilly and Co. (LLY) said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Lyumjev, the company’s new rapid-acting insulin indicated to improve glycemic control in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Lyumjev is a novel formulation of insulin lispro, developed to speed the absorption of insulin into the blood stream and reduce A1C levels. Lyumjev controls high blood sugar levels after meals in adults with diabetes, similar to how natural insulin works after meals in people without diabetes.

Lyumjev is insulin lispro-aabc injection and comes in two strengths: U-100 (100 units per milliliter) and U-200 (200 units per milliliter).

Lyumjev will be included in the Lilly Insulin Value Program, allowing anyone with commercial insurance and those without insurance at all to fill their monthly prescription of Lyumjev for $35.

Lyumjev has been approved by regulatory authorities in several global markets, including Japan and the European Union in March 2020. Lilly is currently working to make Lyumjev available to adults with diabetes in the U.S. as quickly as possible.

Is Tesla the latest victim of the political divide?

New York (CNN Business)Tesla says its Model S Long Range Plus is the first electric vehicle to achieve over 400 miles of EPA-rated range.

The company said in a news release Monday that the vehicle has “an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles, representing a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design.”
The announcement follows previous claims from Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk that the vehicle had reached a capacity of 400 miles. In April during Tesla’s first quarter corporate earnings call, Musk said that the Environmental Protection Agency had made a mistake when it originally tested the Model S Long Range Plus premium sedan.

He said the EPA left the car door open and the keys in the car overnight — putting the vehicle in waiting-for-driver mode. Musk said the action lost 2% of the vehicle’s range.
Musk said at the time that Tesla has its eyes set on improving the vehicles’ ranges over time as well as other aspects, such as handling and acceleration.

Foreign Direct Investment to Plunge as Much as 40%, UN Projects

The United Nations forecasts foreign direct investment globally will fall by as much as 40% this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and continue to slump in 2021, hitting developing nations hardest.

The lockdown measures are slowing investment projects and will lead multinational companies to reassess plans, according to a report released Tuesday by the UN’s trade and development arm. FDI will drop 30% to 40% this year and won’t begin to recover until 2022, and then only slowly, the agency said, cautioning that the the forecast is subject to uncertainty due to Covid-19.

The projected decline would put FDI below $1 trillion for the first time since 2005.

“Flows to developing countries will be hit especially hard, as export-oriented and commodity-linked investments are among the most seriously affected,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote in the report’s preface. “The consequences could last well beyond the immediate impact on investment flows.”

The top 5,000 multinational companies globally have seen expected earnings reduced by 40% on average, with lower profits hitting reinvested earnings that account for more than 50% of FDI, the group said.

The post-pandemic years are likely to see a focus on shifting production to the regional or local level, along with tougher competition in attracting investment from a smaller pool of funds, according to the report. Companies are also likely to try to diversify suppliers.
