Did Patriots’ interest in Odell Beckham squash Giants’ trade plans?

Bill Belichick may be partially responsible for keeping Odell Beckham Jr. with the Giants.

As the Giants surveyed the trade market for their top wide receiver last year, former quarterback/current broadcaster Chris Simms says that the Patriots most aggressively pursued a deal, and it was their interest in acquiring Beckham that prompted the Giants to get “cold feet” over dealing the star.

“The Giants were going to trade him, and I think they were really looking, and listening, to all offers,” Simms said Monday on “PFT Live.” “It was really close … [but] I think the Giants got cold feet and said, ‘Wait, New England wants him? Uh-oh. Maybe he’s better than we thought. Maybe we should just keep him on our own instead of him being thrown in our face and going to win a Super Bowl with the Pats.’”

The Patriots ended up trading for troubled Browns receiver Josh Gordon, who left the team in December. Turns out Belichick and Tom Brady didn’t need a deep threat to win another ring.
