EU Sends Top Official to Brexit Talks, Lifting Deal Hopes: Times

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has sent one of her most senior officials, Stephanie Riso, to assist Michel Barnier in negotiating a trade deal with Britain, raising hopes of a deal by next Friday, the Times of London reported.

Von der Leyen is being “quite helpful” and is “keen to unblock things,” the paper said, citing senior government sources.

Riso was part of Barnier’s team during the Brussels negotiations with Theresa May’s government and is seen as someone who can help to find a solution, the paper said.

Peru’s Ousted Ex-President Martin Vizcarra to Run for Congress

Martin Vizcarra, who was impeached from Peru’s presidency earlier this month, will run for a seat in congress, he announced on Saturday.

Vizcarra will head the list of congressional candidates in April’s general election for Somos Peru, whose lawmakers ironically voted to oust him over corruption allegations.

The unexpected impeachment, which Vizcarra lost in a 105 to 19 vote, plunged Peru into political crisis as it recovers from one of the world’s deepest economic slumps.

“The huge challenges that Peru faces today demand us to be at the service of the people again,” Vizcarra wrote on Twitter.

U.K. Rejects Latest EU Fisheries Offer With Talks Set to Resume

Years of wrangling over Britain’s future trade relationship with the EU are set to enter what could be their final week, with Boris Johnson’s government saying there remains a significant gap on the issue of how much fish European trawlers should be allowed to catch in British waters.

Michel Barnier, the EU’s lead negotiator, has proposed that the EU’s share of the catch be cut to 15% to 18%, an offer that Downing Street dismissed in a statement as “risible.”

“The EU side know full well that we would never accept this,” according to a government official. “No agreement is arguably underpriced.”

Access to Britain’s fishing waters has been one of three key hurdles to an agreement — the others being a level competitive playing field, and how any agreement will be enforced. But the absence in Downing Street’s statement of any mention of these two other issues could spur expectations that a deal is within reach.

A report in The Times newspaper suggested that the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is putting pressure on Barnier by sending one of her most trusted officials to the talks. Citing two unidentified U.K. government officials, the report said the parties should agree to the basis of a trade relationship by next weekend.

Failure to reach a deal would result in extra costs for millions of consumers and businesses from Dec. 31.
