Cash-strapped schools beg parents to pay for textbooks and repairs and donate hundreds of pounds a year

Headteachers are asking parents to hand over up to £1,200 a year to help fund black holes in their budgets.

The figures, revealed in The Times, come after many schools have cut subjects and school hours to save cash.

Out of 700 schools who answered a Freedom of Information Act request, 200 said they had asked for donations from parents in the past year.

A Department for Education spokesman said since 2017 every council has received more funding for schools, but admitted schools face “budgeting challenges”.
