DUBAI, Jan 8 (Reuters) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps confirmed on Wednesday that it fired rockets at a U.S. air base in Iraq in revenge for the killing of Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, according to a statement.

Singapore Airlines diverts flights from Iranian airspace
SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore Airlines said on Wednesday it was diverting all flight routes from Iranian airspace.
The move comes after Iran said it launched a missile attack on U.S.-led forces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday in retaliation for a U.S. drone strike on an Iranian commander whose killing has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
“All SIA flight routes are being diverted from the Iranian airspace,” the airline said in an email, without giving a reason for the diversion.
Iran starts 'second round' of attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq: Tasnim

Number of Salvadorians deported home rises 40% in 2019
SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) – The number of Salvadorians deported from Mexico and the United States back to their home country increased more than 40% in 2019 compared to a year earlier, the country’s migration authority said Tuesday.
Central American countries, Mexico and the United States have all hardened their migration policies over the past year, including deploying military, to stop undocumented migrants crossing borders on their way north.
El Salvador received 37,297 deported citizens last year, up from 26,503 a year earlier, official statistics obtained by Reuters showed.

Pompeo, Esper arrive at White House after Iran attack on Iraqi base
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived at the White House late on Tuesday after Iran fired missiles on at least two Iraqi air bases hosting U.S.-led coalition forces.
A White House spokeswoman said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the attacks as is monitoring the situation closely. Vice President Mike Pence has been in contact with congressional leaders, a Pence spokeswoman said.
China lifts yuan midpoint to highest level in 5 months
SHANGHAI, Jan 8 (Reuters) – China’s central bank lifted its official yuan midpoint to the highest in five months on Wednesday to reflect strong gains in the spot yuan in the previous session.
The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate at 6.9450 per dollar prior to the market open, 240 pips or 0.35% firmer than the previous fix of 6.9690 and the strongest since Aug. 5, 2019.
China’s onshore spot yuan rallied on Tuesday, supported by corporate dollar selling.

An Iraqi security source told Reuters that at least seven rockets fell inside Ain Al-Asad air base in Anbar province.
Burbank Police Step Up Patrols Around Warner Bros Lot Following Threat
The Burbank Police Department has increased patrols around the Warner Bros lot following at least one threat to the studio, Sgt. Jeff Barcus said Tuesday.
Police did not offer specifics on the nature of the threat, which came in this afternoon. No evacuations were ordered, an individual at the studio told Deadline.
“We have not been made aware of any credible threats, but continue to coordinate with local authorities and monitor the situation, as we do in any such circumstance,” Warner Bros said this evening in a statement.
It was unclear if the threat was connected to those received earlier today at the SAG-AFTRA offices in the Miracle Mile neighborhood of Los Angeles. Employees were told to evacuate the building after an unspecified threat of an attack came was reported this afternoon.
As Deadline previously reported, an LAPD spokesperson confirmed that a phone call was made “saying that they may be attacking the SAG office.” On the recommendation of the police department, the guild closed its offices. After several hours, nothing suspicious was found.
