In a conversation with Maren Morris on Beats 1 marking International Women’s Day, Brandi Carlile shared details about the new musical project called The Highwomen.

The project, primarily consisting of Carlile, Morris and Amanda Shires, formed in the wake of the challenges women are facing in country music, in line with the country music supergroup The Highwaymen.

“The whole idea started with Amanda Shires. Like we were basically hanging out and we got to know each other, became fast friends, fell in love, and she said we should start like a political movement,” Carlile said.

Shires came up with the name The Highwomen in reference to the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.

“She was like, ‘Yeah, but the Highwomen. And not high like high,'” Carlile explained. “Like exalted. Above the fold.”

“Women need to be included,” she added. “Women need to experience representation in country and Western music and Americana and that starts in Nashville. It starts with us.”
