Inside Factory OS, the Big Tech-backed modular home company looking to solve the affordable housing crisis
The affordable housing crisis in the United States continues to be a problem and it's only getting worse. Nationally, there is a shortage of about seven million affordable homes for our nation's more than 11 million extremely low-income families, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Some areas are worse off than others, with the San Francisco Bay Area — the heart of the U.S. tech industry — among the worst.
Factory-built modular homes are gaining traction as a possible solution, and could reduce the cost of construction by 20 to 40%. Entekra, Blu Homes and Blokable are already using this building technique while Connect Homes, which is led by a former Apple exec, has raised $27 million to do the same. Google and Facebook have invested in another company, Factory OS, which is building affordable homes in the Bay Area.
Watch the video to find out how modular construction could be the best solution to solving the nation's affordable housing problem.
Ireland open to modest extensions to Northern Ireland Brexit grace periods
- "I would be open to advocating for modest extensions of grace periods," Coveney told Ireland's RTE Radio.
Ireland is open to "modest" extensions of waivers on the movement of certain goods from Britain into Northern Ireland after the British government asked the European Union to tweak post-Brexit rules, Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said.
Coveney was speaking ahead of talks on the issue next week in London between British Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove and European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, both of whom Coveney said he was in regular contact with.
"I would be open to advocating for modest extensions of grace periods," Coveney told Ireland's RTE Radio, but he said there was no question of scrapping the Northern Ireland Protocol of Britain's EU divorce deal.
Border(line) decisions | Nadhim Zahawi & Dr David Nabarro
Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi defends the government’s decision to only put arrivals from certain countries into hotel quarantine.
He also confirms the UK will not have vaccine passports. The WHO’s Special Envoy on Covid-19 Dr David Nabarro says the UK should give away vaccine once it has jabbed over-50s. He also says British scientists have been vindicated over the 12-week dosing gap.

The Chiefs settle for a field goal with a minute to go before halftime.
Those three plays out of the two-minute warning will disappoint Mahomes, Andy Reid and Chiefs fans everywhere. But they salvage something with a 34-yard field goal by Butker, his second of the game.
Of course, they’ve also left Brady a minute to do more damage.
WATCH: Buccaneers’ Tom Brady connects with Antonio Brown for touchdown in Super Bowl LV – The Denver Post
Make that three touchdowns for Tom Brady.
The Buccaneers quarterback connected with receiver Antonio Brown for a score at the end of the first half Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The score gave Tampa Bay a 21-6 lead going into halftime.
Brady turns a couple more Chiefs mistakes into another touchdown.
Leaving Brady a minute was, in hindsight, a big mistake.
But the Chiefs made a few of their own, too: They called timeout before a third-down play to try to force a punt but didn’t make a stop on the ensuing play, then got whistled for a 34-yard pass-interference penalty. A Leonard Fournette run and another penalty put the ball on the 1-yard line with 10 seconds left.
And from there, Brady dropped back and rocketed a pass to Brown. Touchdown. It’s 21-6 now, and that Chiefs momentum they just had is gone.
