Just hours after announcing he would enter the Democratic presidential race Thursday, former congressman Beto O’Rourke arrived in Iowa to hold an informal town hall meeting.

Ticking off a list of crises that threaten the country, including inequality, lack of health care and the environmental problems posed by climate change, O’Rourke said it’s time to make a stand.

“This setting right now, the very first event of our campaign for president, is an example not only of the way I wish to campaign across the country for every single American – and i could care less about your party persuasion, your religion, anything other than the fact that we are all Americans,” he told the crowd at a restaurant in Keokuk, Iowa. “This is democracy.”

Telling the diners that this is his first visit to Iowa, O’Rourke told them that he wanted to hear what’s on their minds.

“I’m all ears. There’s no sense in campaigning if you already know every single answer … that’s what brought me here,” he said.
