Wetherspoons drinks cut from menus in a pre-Brexit cull – what’s gone missing

High street pub JD Wetherspoon has been pulling drinks from shelves for more than a year over its hard-line stance on Brexit .

Its boss – Tim Martin – has been sticking to a promise to sell more UK and non-EU brands as Britain prepares to go break away in March.

In September, it withdrew Jagerbombs from all 880 branches in the UK, replacing the popular drink with an English version called Strika – that was later dubbed ‘Brexit Bombs’ by customers.

And more recently it called time on all European wines and fizz previously stocked across the chain’s pubs, replaced by bottles from the USA, Australia, Chile, New Zealand and Argentina.

Over the past year, a third of EU beers from its draught selection have been culled with Germany’s Erdinger, Denmark’s Tuborg and the Czech Republic’s Staropramen shown the door.

Bolla Pinot Grigio and Freixenet, both from Italy, Faustino VII Rioja made in Spain have also been axed.

Elsewhere it’s switched away from a range of drinks including Champagne and wheat beers, which are produced in France and Germany.

The pub said withdrawing European brands from shelves will lead to cheaper prices for customers overall.

Its founder and chairman, Tim Martin, said: "Tariffs are imposed on wine from Australia, New Zealand and the US, and also on coffee, oranges, rice and more than 12,000 other products.

"There will be an inevitable transfer of trade post-Brexit to countries outside the EU, which will reduce prices in shops and pubs.

"The products we are now introducing are at lower prices than the EU products they are replacing."

But what other drinks are being axed?

All champagnes have been stripped from its pubs while even Italian prosecco has been removed from all drink menus.

They have been replaced by sparkling wines from Australia and England.

However, the chain will continue to serve Kopparberg cider from Sweden after the manufacturer confirmed that it will be producing its cider in the UK post-Brexit.

Mirror Money asked what’s next and a spokesman from the chain said: "The company said it might replace more drinks, but that hasn’t happened yet."
