Supermarket ‘sham’ petrol price wars actually make drivers spend more there
When supermarkets cut prices, they don't do it in quiet small steps – but as nationally announced promises.
More than that, they nearly always follow each other – with ASDA normally firing the first salvo of a price war the other major players quickly join.
But while the big players duke it out in the spotlight, that doesn't mean prices will actually fall much for motorists.
The AA found that a pump price war offering a 3p-a-litre saving on Friday September 13 resulted in just half a penny off the UK’s petrol average by the Sunday.
There has been an impact on where people choose to fill up though.
"Pump price wars, even when a sham across much of the UK, bolster supermarket fuel sales, according to new Government statistics," the AA said.
Government figures show that while fuel sales have fallen 1% to 2% generally, those at superstores have risen as much as 4.4%.
