Supermarket opening times for all the major chains on New Year Eve

With the start of 2019 a few days away, chances are you’ll need to stock up on groceries and household essentials ahead of New Year’s Eve.

But before you rush out it’s worth checking supermarket opening times here first to avoid any disappointment (or the horror) of being left without enough booze and party food to ring in the New Year.

Shoppers won’t be left out in the cold as number of major supermarket chains will be open, however most will be shutting early on New Year’s Eve.

To be sure of trading times for your local branch it’s always advisable to check the supermarket website – or have a scan below for a quick guide.

We have also rounded up of all the major Boxing Day sales that will continue through to January, for anyone whose Christmas money is burning a hole in their pocket.

Tesco

Customers should check online at tesco.com for full details of their local store here, as the supermarket will keep the majority open.

        • New Year’s Eve – England, Wales & Scotland Extras, Superstores and Metro stores open until 7pm. All Express stores open until 10pm. Petrol stations will shut an hour after the main store closes. London petrol stations will close at 10pm.
        • New Year’s Day – England, Wales & Northern Ireland Extras, Superstores and Metro stores open 9am – 6pm. Express stores open 8am – 10pm. Scotland Extras, Superstores open 11am – 6am. Metro and Express stores open 10am – 6pm. All petrol stations open 8am – 7pm.

        Morrisons

          Morrisons New Year opening times:

          • New Year’s Eve – Stores will be open from 6am until 4pm. Cafes will be open from 7am until 5pm and petrol stations will be open from 6am until 6.30pm.
          • New Year’s Day – Store will be open from 9am until 6pm. Cafes will be open from 9am until 3pm and petrol stations will be open from 8am until 8pm.

          Lidl

          Budget supermarket Lidl will operate reduced hours over the holidays and times will vary depending on your location. Check the rough guide below or head to the retailer’s website for more detailed information.

            Lidl New Year opening times:

            • New Year’s Eve – In Englandstores will be open from 8am – 6pm. In Scotland stores will be open from 8am – 6pm or 7pm
            • New Year’s Day – In England stores will be closed. However, most stores within the M25 will be open from 10am – 6pm. In Scotland stores will be closed.

            Sainsbury’s

            Sainsbury’s have confirmed stores will be open over the New Year break, but check for reduced opening hours here.

            Sainsbury’s New Year opening times:

            • New Year’s Eve -Larger Sainsbury’s stores will be open from usual time until 7pm. Sainsbury’s Local stores will be open from usual time until 9pm.
            • New Year’s Day – Larger Sainsbury’s stores will be open from 9am until 5pm.Sainsbury’s Local stores will be open from 9am until 9pm

            Asda

            Supermarket giant Asda will be open throughout the festive period. Shoppers can use our guide below or the store finder tool on Asda’s website to check when their local branch will be open.

            Asda New Year opening times:

            • New Year’s Eve -Most Asda stores will be open from around 8am – 7pm
            • New Year’s Day – Most Asda stores will be open from around 10am – 5pm

            Aldi

            Shoppers who want to shop will not be able to head to Aldi today – but all stores will open on 27 December and customers should check their local times here as some some local branch details may differ.

            Aldi New Year opening times:

            • New Year’s Eve – stores will be open from 8am-6pm
            • New Year’s Day – all stores will be closed

            On Wednesday 2nd January, Aldi have confirmed stores will be open from 8am until 10pm.

            Waitrose

            If you plan to visit Waitrose today some stores will be closing earlier than normal, so check timings below or visit: www.waitrose.com before setting off.

            Waitrose New Year opening times:

            • New Year’s Eve – Waitrose will be open but may close earlier than usual.
            • New Year’s Day – Waitrose convenience shops will open from 7am – 10pm or 11am – 7pm depending on location.

            Iceland

            • New Year’s Eve – stores will be open but shoppers advised to check Iceland website for full details.
