New Eddie Rocket's boss hungry to beef up regional presence

Fast food group Eddie Rocket’s plans to bring its outlets to Galway, Cork and Limerick cities as part of its domestic expansion, its newly-appointed managing director has said.

The company has 51 outlets, including one in Germany, but intends to add more both in Ireland and abroad.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, Adrian Crean said that the company’s expansion plans would be more “iterative than aggressive”.

“There are opportunities for the brand to grow but we would be targeted in terms of how we grow and the pace we grow at,” he said.

Crean highlighted the country’s regional cities in particular for future growth as well as the “natural evolution” of the Dublin marketplace.

The group’s business is predominantly based on the franchise model with Crean stressing the importance of finding a partner that was “embedded in their community”.

The new Rocket’s managing director took over from Niall Fortune, who founded the business 30 years ago. For seven years, Crean was head of McDonald’s in Ireland, in competition with Fortune. He said despite this he had always “admired” the Rocket’s brands.

Crean left McDonald’s in 2017 when the company announced it was scaling back its management operations here with the business now managed from the UK. He went on to take up a role as chief brand and strategy officer in forecourt retailer Applegreen but said that he was always keen to move back into the food business.

“My ambition was always to get back into a leadership role as a CEO or MD of a brand and helping it shape its direction, vision and strategies to help grow the business with that,” he said.
