MotoRefi, which opened its second headquarters office in Denver, tripled its team in 2020 while increasing monthly revenue, says Kevin Bennett, MotoRefi chief executive officer. 

“We were able to do that by leaning into a remote-first approach, over-indexing on communication, and being transparent with our teams,” Bennett says.

The Virginia-based company, which helps consumers refinance auto loans to lower their monthly payments, ranks second on the Top Workplaces small business list.

The company has frequent virtual all-hands meetings, happy hours and game nights. It also invested in providing counseling and mental health services for employees.

Looking forward

MotoRefi anticipates its growth will continue in 2021 and is busy hiring employees for sales, engineering and marketing positions. 

Working remotely in 2020 showed the company doesn’t need to require employees to work in a traditional office. 

“Having onboarded more than half of our team in a remote-only environment, we saw how successful it can be, and how many folks are interested in hybrid and satellite offices,” Bennett says. “We’re leaning into making our company location-agnostic and flexible for everyone.” 

For employees who want to work in an office, MotoRefi supports collaborative in-person work.

“We’re building a community of amazing people on the team, and we’ll always do what we need to do to attract and hire the best talent because talent is the ballgame,” Bennett says.

Denver was a natural choice for the company’s second headquarters, Bennett says. 

“Denver has a powerful combination of great talent and high quality of life that made it an easy choice for our HQ2,” he says. “Cities like New York and San Francisco are getting increasingly expensive and less livable for talent in the workforce, and many people are choosing to live in less expensive high quality of life cities like Denver, which has incredible amenities and an incredible environment. Denver also has strong talent across sales, engineering, product, and other disciplines; it is a no-brainer o for a fast-growing startup like MotoReer.”
