Knight Build doubles turnover amid iceberg basement demand

Knight Build, an Irish-owned construction firm based on the outskirts of London that sponsors Dunmore Rugby Club in Co Galway, doubled its turnover to £60m (€71m) for the year to the end of March, according to recently filed accounts.

The firm is one of two owned by Irish builders in London that specialises in work such as so-called ‘iceberg basements’. These are hidden underneath properties and can consist of two or three storeys, including anything from swimming pools to underground multi-car garages, gyms and cinemas.

Knight Build’s website details multi-million-pound projects undertaken in London’s most expensive postcodes, such as Kensington and Mayfair, including one, two and three-storey basements.

It is majority-owned by John Knight, according to UK company filings.

The firm made a pre-tax profit of £4.49m, despite “challenging conditions”, up from £2.63m on revenues of £32.1m for the previous year.

It works “solely for blue-chip clients”, the accounts state, and “many of the projects we undertake are repeat business”.

The type of work the firm conducts includes: design and project management; basement construction; high-end residential development and refurbishment; installation of specialist waterproof systems; civil engineering; substructure; concrete frames; and hard landscaping, according to the accounts.
