Investor confidence grows on 'sigh of relief' over Brexit

Investors are modestly more confident thanks to a ‘Brexit bounce’, according to Bank of Ireland’s latest test of sentiment.

Its quarterly Investment Index, published today and based on a survey of 1,000 consumers by Ipsos MRBI, rose for the first time since the March report.

It found that 35pc were “investing regularly” for the third straight quarter, with confidence and activity highest among younger investors.

The rating for the investment environment rebounded from a record low of 76 to 82.

But Tom McCabe, global investment strategist at Bank of Ireland, said those wary of investing still outnumber those taking the plunge.

Some 34pc said it was a bad time to invest versus 25pc who view the time as opportune.

Mr McCabe said sentiment inevitably improved “as the Brexit can was again kicked down the road”.

“The ‘Brexit bounce’ in Q4 feels more like a collective sigh of relief rather than people genuinely feeling more bullish,” he said.
