A granddad in Cornwall is so committed to Halloween, he's splashed thousands and thousands of pounds making his home as frightening as possible.

Rod Dawson, from Nanpean, spends weeks planning and building his terrifying haunted house – filled with witches, clowns and zombies, Cornwall Live reports .

Each room has a different theme, but the 55-year-old admits it's not cheap – last year Rod spent around £13,000.

This year he plans to do better – even securing a handful of ghoulish volunteers to torment unexpecting visitors.

But he doesn't make a penny back from visitors – in fact, he gives donations away.

"After a while people started asking where they are supposed to put donations so we are raising money for Cornwall Air Ambulance," Rod said.

"We do it because it's a lot of fun and a lot of screams – we just do it for the fun of it really," Rod said.

"This year we are starting at the bottom of our lane and we have a theme in each room of our house. There will be a circus room, witches room, bats and ghouls.

"There is a room full of gravestones. We have loads of animatronics and smoke. There is also a pirate room.

"We don't have things or people that jump out, they just move slightly.

"Last year we had costumes that we stuffed and this year people will be in them, there will be ten of us hiding around the house this time."

Rod continued: "We used to have to inform the police and the bus companies so they knew there might be some congestion – thousands of people would turn up.

"We started building things and putting it together three weeks ago and now we are trying to ramp it up a bit and do some more.

"Last year the storm blew away one of the tents so we are making sure it is all secure this year.

"Over the past few years people have been scared of clowns with the killer clown craze, so that's where the idea for the circus room came from.

"I don't actually like horror films so that's not where I've gotten my ideas from. I guess it just comes from my imagination.

"We also have lots of projections of holograms around the house.

"A friend gave us lots of stuff from America last year but in total we spent around £13,000 – it's like Christmas. We do make a lot of it ourselves.

"We've got some mannequins this year."
