How to get free doughballs at Pizza Express by whispering one controversial word

While veganism is still a fairly controversial subject, the high street are slowly starting to adopt the anti-animal way of eating, with vegan variants of our favourite foods popping up in restaurants all over Britain.

If you are on board with the often-disputed way of eating, Pizza Express have your back, having just announced that they’re giving away free doughballs for vegans this Veganuary. As long as they whisper one word that not everybody is a fan of hearing…

Every Tuesday this January at PizzaExpress, anyone ordering a vegan main can whisper ‘Veganuary’ to their waiter to receive a portion of vegan Dough Balls, completely free.

Instead of the deliciously decadent garlic butter that the brand’s doughballs became famous for, Pizza Express has developed its very own vegan pestorissa dip – a vegan harissa spiced tomato dip that’s similar to pesto – for the vegan doughballs to be dipped in instead.

Sadly, you will have to order a vegan main to go alongside your vegan starter, so you can’t forget the purse completely, but we never say no to a free portion of doughballs, especially when they usually set you back £4.25.

There’s three vegan mains in total to pick from, as well as a vegan pudding if you’re still hungry for a third course.

The latest pizza to join the rankings is the Puttanesca, topped with meat-mimicking jackfruit, puts up a good fight against their long-standing Giardiniera pizza (finished with artichoke, mushroom, red onion and olives), which is one of their best-sellers, meaning plenty of non-vegans are also ordering it.

For pasta lovers there’s the pepperonata, full of tomatoey, spicy, peppery deliciousness, while vegan pudding lovers can get excited over Pizza Express’ dairy-free Dolceti carrot cake, served alongside a coffee now that soy milk is also available for the brand’s hot drinks.
