Flight cancellations and delays at DIA on busy holiday weekend.

More than 160 flights have been delayed and 20 flights canceled at Denver International Airport on Saturday morning, with possible severe thunderstorms looming in the afternoon and evening weather forecast.

The July Fourth weekend is an extremely busy travel period and the airport expects about 2.5 million travelers to pass through by Tuesday.

Of the 20 flight cancellations, Southwest Airlines had 18, 4% of its traffic at DIA, according to Flight Aware. Southwest also has the most delays, 101, or 25% of its Denver flights.

On Friday, Southwest canceled at least 75 flights in and out of DIA. The airline said in a statement that stormy summer weather across the country was contributing to its difficulties.

Thunderstorms, with heavy rain and the threat of local flooding, once again cloud the afternoon and evening forecast for the Front Range and Denver-metro area.

There’s a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms for Denver, mainly after 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
