Adsa’s £5 vegan Easter egg wins joint top spot with M&S in blind taste test
In the 2020 blind taste test for Good Housekeeping, Asda’s £5 vegan easter egg has come out on top as the ‘best egg’ of the bunch out of 31 different varieties.
It reigns in at the top spot with an Extra Thick Blonde and White Chocolate Egg from M&S, £12 (500g) and The Chocolate Libertine Honeycomb Beehive Egg with Honeycomb nuggets, which costs a hefty £69.99 (1.05kg).
Even compared to some of it’s more expensive rivals, judges gave top marks to Asda’s Extra Special Free-From and Vegan Belgian Dark Chocolate Egg with Vanilla Truffles, which is both dairy and gluten free.
Catering for the millions of Brits who have adopted a flexitarian approach to their diet and consuming less meat and dairy on a weekly basis and with some remaining vegan after trying it out for January (aka Veganuary).
Good Housekeeping Institute said “Tasters couldn't get enough of the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate with hidden crunchy cocoa nibs and loved the deliciously gooey truffles that come with it.”
Artisan brand Booja-Booja has won best Easter egg for the past three years running and trusty Asda has knocked it off the top spot this year.
Alongside the Easter egg test, various other foods were blind tested including hot cross buns and Easter foods including roast potatoes, chicken, lamb, Yorkshire puddings and various sauces such as horseradish sauce, mint sauce and onion gravy. Our mouth is watering just thinking about it.
According to GHI, Co-op has the tastiest chicken and Waitrose has the best tart – cheeky.
M&S also came out on top with the 'best hot cross buns' which includes a gluten free range, and also won the best Easter roast crown with top-rated goose fat potatoes, lamb, onion gravy and Yorkshire puddings.
Angela Trofymova, head of food testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, said: "We’re delighted this year to not only test the best Easter sweet treats, but also to look at a favourite for a lot of families – the Easter lunch.
"The results this year were really interesting, from Asda winning best tasting egg for its gluten and dairy free to M&S clearly outshining all the other supermarkets when it comes to Easter lunch options.
"What’s important to us is that every item we taste test is completely blind and scored on merit – which is why we always have such a wide ranging and interesting set of results."
Taste tests run by the Good Housekeeping Institute proves, like with the newer vegan options Greggs has to offer, that taste doesn’t need to be compromised on when creating free-from products.
