The wedding of Japan’s Princess Mako appears to be back on, 11 months after the Imperial Household Agency put the occasion on hold due to an unseemly row within her fiancé’s family over money.

Kei Komuro is expected to release a statement in the coming days to confirm all financial disagreements between his relatives have been resolved and apologise for “causing trouble” by failing to explain the situation to the satisfaction of the imperial family, Kyodo News reported.

Mr Komuro (28) and the princess (27) announced their engagement in September 2017 and set last November for their wedding.

In February of last year, however, the Imperial Household Agency announced the date for the wedding was being delayed after reports appeared in the tabloid media concerning a dispute between Mr Komuro’s mother and her former boyfriend over four million yen (€32,200) that he loaned her, in part to cover her son’s university costs.

Mr Komuro’s mother reportedly claimed the money was a gift and she was not obliged to repay it.

The princess’s parents, Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, have met Mr Komuro’s mother on several occasions and made it clear they would not give their consent for the wedding to go ahead until any suggestions of impropriety had been concluded.

Princess Mako is the eldest grandchild of Emperor Akihito. The wedding is now expected to take place in 2020.
