SINGAPORE – Several flights from Singapore to Hong Kong were delayed or cancelled on Monday (Aug 12) as protesters continued to stage a sit-in at Hong Kong International Airport.

This follows an announcement by the Hong Kong authorities on Monday afternoon that all flights out of Hong Kong were cancelled. Media reports said at least 130 flights departing from Hong Kong were affected.

“Singapore residents have been advised to return home or not to leave for the airport given the current situation. Those who had checked in have been allowed to collect their baggage,” said Mr Ivan Tan, a spokesman for the Changi Airport Group.

“Non-residents have been advised to check with their airline regarding options available to them which may include alternate flights to their final destination for those who were going to transit in Hong Kong,” the spokesman added.

As of 6pm on Monday, three flights departing from Changi operated by Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific Airways were delayed, according to Changi Airport’s website.

The two flights that were cancelled were operated by Scoot and Singapore Airlines.

The Singapore Airlines flight was en route to San Francisco via Hong Kong and scheduled to leave at 6.30pm, according to the website.

It is unclear whether flights out of Hong Kong will resume on Tuesday.

There are 20 flights departing from Singapore to Hong Kong, and 20 flights arriving from Hong Kong scheduled for Tuesday.
