TAIPEI, TAIWAN (AP) – The former chairman of major contract manufacturer Foxconn met a prominent Taiwanese lawmaker on Wednesday (Sept 11) as he weighs a possible independent run for president.

Mr Terry Gou, who lost a bid to be the Nationalist Party candidate in July, held talks with Mr Wang Jin-pyng, a Nationalist lawmaker and former long-time leader of the legislature.

“We both share the same idea,” Mr Gou said. “For the 23 million people in Taiwan, the interests of the people should be greater than the interests of the party.”

Mr Wang said after their meeting that Mr Gou did not say whether he would run, only that he was still considering it.

Mr Gou stepped down as the head of Foxconn, a contract manufacturer of electronics including the iPhone, in June.

He lost the Nationalist primary the next month to Mr Han Kuo-yu, the populist mayor of the port city of Kaohsiung.

Ms Evelyn Tsai, an aide to Mr Gou, said earlier this month that he would run as an independent if he enters the race, according to Taiwanese media reports.

He has until Tuesday, the deadline to register as a candidate, to decide.

Mr Gou would face Mr Han and incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party in the January election.
