China's Hubei province reports 242 new coronavirus deaths, new cases rise by 14,840

BEIJING (REUTERS) – The number of deaths in China’s central Hubei province from a coronavirus outbreak rose by 242 to 1,310 as of Wednesday (Feb 12), the province’s health commission said on its website on Thursday.

A further 14,840 cases had been detected in Hubei, the epicentre of the outbreak, taking the total in the province to 48,206.

The huge jump came as local officials said they were broadening their definition for the cases.

The commission said that it had begun including cases diagnosed through new clinical methods from Thursday.

This is to “allow patients to receive standard treatment as a confirmed case of infection as soon as possible”, said the commission.

It said it is based on guidelines published by the National Health Commission and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This is a developing story.
